Ovarian cysts can be simple cysts which are only fluid collections or they can be complicated cysts. Simple cysts require removal only if indicated or the size is big. Complicated cysts require removal. Depending on the age of the patient and investigations, only the cyst can be removed or sometimes the ovary needs to be removed. This can be done by laparoscopy. A small incision is made above the belly button and two other small incisions of 5mm are made on either side of the abdomen. A telescope is inserted to visualize the cyst and depending on the size and the appearance the cyst can be removed laparoscopically.
